June 1, 2025

We've just pushed some updates that'll make your FHIR life easier. Quick preview of what's new below:

Key Improvements

MCP FHIR Server – Early Access

Explore a new MCP module that lets you connect popular AI tools (like Claude and Cursor) to the Aidbox FHIR server using standardized endpoints.

More Flexible Subscriptions

You can now use resolve() in AidboxSubscriptionTopics fhirPathCriteria to filter subscriptions by linked resources – for example, only triggering on Encounters for specific patients.

AidboxTrigger for Automation

Run SQL automatically when FHIR resources change, so you can enforce business rules without extra middleware.

UI & Auth Updates

  • Navigation is easier with breadcrumbs and special resource pages.
  • You can set a default IdentityProvider in the Aidbox Client resource to skip the Aidbox login screen.
  • When authorizing a SMART app, you'll now see which permissions (scopes) are being requested.

Aidbox Forms

I skipped a lot of recent conferences to prioritize attending FHIR Camp 2024 in Portugal the week before last. It was well worth the trip! It was great to hear Grahame Grieve give the background story on how FHIR came to be an open source effort. The open source angle is really important and unique in that it will require a lot of meaningful collaboration and perhaps unprecedented transparency (things we're not great at in the US) to advance these standards in the coming years. There is and will be a lot of opportunity for people to develop and offer FHIR expertise.
