FHIR Impact Showcase: Health Samurai and Patients Know Best

July 1, 2025

A new video featuring Mate Varga, CTO of Patients Know Best, and Nikolai Ryzhikov, CTO of Health Samurai, is now available. The video explains how FHIR is enabling patients in the UK to access and manage their own health records more easily.

Patients Know Best operates the largest FHIR-based Personal Health Record system, linking general practitioners, hospitals, and the NHS App. This system processes tens of millions of test results and clinical records every month.

The video highlights how more than 5 million patients can securely view their health information, share it with doctors and carers, and add data themselves. This helps healthcare professionals get a clearer and more complete picture of each patient’s health.

By giving patients control over their records, the system supports better self-care and reduces pressure on healthcare services.

This collaboration project was presented as part of DevDays 2025, the world’s largest FHIR-only event organized by Firely in partnership with HL7 International. DevDays 2025 took place in Amsterdam from June 3-6, bringing together healthcare IT professionals from around the globe to share knowledge and real-world FHIR implementations.

Watch the video and learn more about this patient-focused approach.

About Patients Know Best

Patients Know Best is the World’s largest Personal Health Record (PHR) and patient engagement platform, integrating data feeds from over 550 health organisations and providers. The system connects information from GPs, hospitals, social and mental health care providers, to create a single, unified copy of patient data. Everything from appointments and letters to test results, care plans, real-time monitoring data and discharge summaries, as well as the patient’s own data, are all available in one patient record, enabling patients and healthcare professionals to access up-to-date health information anytime, anywhere. In the UK, the platform serves around 4.7 million patients, registering 100,000+ patients and releasing over 20 million test results a month. PKB integrates with the NHS App to provide a single front door for patients to access their information.

I skipped a lot of recent conferences to prioritize attending FHIR Camp 2024 in Portugal the week before last. It was well worth the trip! It was great to hear Grahame Grieve give the background story on how FHIR came to be an open source effort. The open source angle is really important and unique in that it will require a lot of meaningful collaboration and perhaps unprecedented transparency (things we're not great at in the US) to advance these standards in the coming years. There is and will be a lot of opportunity for people to develop and offer FHIR expertise.
