DAY 3 · NOVEMBER 6, 2026
AI on FHIR Hackathon
Build a healthcare project in a day with the people in the room. Pitch in the morning, hack through the day, demo in the evening, everyone votes.
What you can build
Must be healthcare
Anything in the space counts - clinical, administrative, research, patient-facing, or back-office.
FHIR is a bonus, not a must
FHIR-powered projects get a +1 bonus on each vote (see Rules & voting below), but you can build without it.
Come with drafts, not finished work
Bring code and ideas from before - the point is you don't start from zero on the island. Core building happens on Day 3.
Solo or team, no cap
Build alone or form a team of any size. Teams of 2+ get a +1 bonus on each vote.
How the day runs
Rules & voting
Pitch
2 minutes per team at the morning kickoff. Add a Pitch URL (slides or a page) to your project in the Camp app - we'll put it on the big screen while you talk.
Demo
10 minutes per team at the end of the day. Show what you built live, not a slideshow.
Voting
Every attendee at the camp votes. Team members can't vote for their own team's project.
* Each vote carries bonuses: +1 if the project uses FHIR, +1 if the team has more than one person. Max +2.
How to enter
Open the Camp app
Scan the QR on your badge or follow the link.
Add your project
Under the Hackathon tab, click Add project. Fill in title, description, and a Pitch URL. Invite teammates or stay solo and let people join.
Submit any time
No deadline. You can submit on the morning of Day 3. All we need is a clear pitch of what the project is.
Tools you can use
Everything below is free for the hackathon. You can also bring the stack you're already fluent in - the point is to ship something by demo time, not learn a new tool during the sprint.
Aidbox - FHIR server to build against
Two ways to start, both free for the hackathon:
- Hosted sandbox - fastest, no setup. Create a free dev instance at aidbox.app.
- Local Docker - full control, no rate limits. ~5 minutes if Docker is installed.
BMJ clinical intelligence - evidence-based knowledge graph
Peer-reviewed clinical guidelines turned into a computable knowledge graph. 30+ specialty areas, cross-mapped to SNOMED CT, LOINC, RxNorm, ICD-10, and CPT.
What's in the sandbox
Hosted in GitHub Codespaces with a GraphQL server, interactive workbench, pre-built starter queries, synthetic patient data, and value sets. Sandbox slices cover COPD, acute COPD, Type 2 diabetes in adults, ongoing atrial fibrillation, and ischemic stroke.
Great for
- Grounded AI and RAG pipelines (ground LLM responses in validated clinical evidence)
- FHIR-native CDS (PlanDefinition / ClinicalReasoning)
- Differential-diagnosis generators and risk stratification
- Prior-authorization logic
Request access ahead of the event
Access is free for Camp participants but needs to be set up at least one week before November 6. Email Derrick Leung at dleung@bmj.com with your GitHub username and a one-line description of your hackathon project focus.
Ready to build?
Pitch your project in the Camp app so other builders can find it and join. The sooner it's up, the more teammates it attracts.
